I enjoy writing my blog – I love having the blog to encourage me to be more creative. It’s somewhere to “show off” artwork that I’m proud of. I also enjoy writing and I have always tried to keep a very positive and encouraging feel to my writing and blog. Over the holiday I’ve made several attempts to write something interesting and meaningful, or to create some inspiring artwork to share. I have abandoned several draft posts in the last week because I just couldn’t find my normal upbeat voice. Sometimes though, you just gotta tell it like it is – it hasn’t been a great start to the year.
Adrian’s dad has had another stroke and is back in hospital. I won’t bore you with the details, the hours we waited in the corridor to be seen, the 8 hours it took for him to be admitted … etc. I will try very hard not to rant about the short sighted politics that closed our local hospital’s A&E department so that we now have to travel to Durham to see him – almost three times as far. He’s doing ok, but not allowed to eat as his throat muscles mean he isn’t safe to swallow food or drink. Until routines get back to normal next week, he hasn’t been assessed by a stroke specialist yet, so there’s not really much more to report.
The most positive thing that has happened today is that Basil killed a poor little jenny wren. That might sound apalling and believe me, when it happened it was completely surreal. Basil is very poorly and will not eat at all. Over the holiday he has eaten less and less each day, and now he will only lap halfheartedly at a little fresh cream. He is crying a lot less and I’m sure he’s getting very dehydrated. Heartbreaking to watch and definitely the main reason I’ve been feeling low all week.
So when a wren suddenly flew into the lounge this morning (what? .. how? ..) we were shocked to see Basil leap up from the sofa and hurtle to the windowsill where he very efficiently dispatched it with one swipe and started to tuck in. Our normal reaction in the past would be to gently remove the poor bird and have stern words with Basil about keeping his hunting activites outside the house. We both stood there astounded and looked at each other and apart from picking him up (bird and all) and moving him to the tiled hallway, we guiltily left him to it and tried to work out where on earth the bird had come from.
The day we built Gertrude and Rocky, I spotted Basil inside the house eating a bird. I thought at the time it was a robin, so didn’t really want to tell the world on Christmas eve that we were responsible for one less robin in the world. Now I’m wondering if it was a robin or another wren as we think we’ve worked out where the wren came from – the hole in the ceiling left by our boiler installation a few months ago! We really must get that fixed.
This is all that’s left of Gertrude and Rocky now …
We have a headless chicken in our garden!
Add into the picture another fault on the phone line at home which left us with no broadband or voice line for a few days and a frustrating week at work trying to get everything done for our new computer system and coming up against a few problems, and you’ll see why I’ve not really had the energy to blog much.
I have carved out pockets of time in the craft room though. I downloaded a blank colour chart from the Copic website and did my own colour chart. It’s a great way to see what you’ve got and much more accurate than relying on the cap colour or number alone.
We are exhibiting Elusive Images stamps in America at the end of January, so I’ve been prepping up some samples for the show and working on Guild projects. Here’s little sneak peek of some new EI stamps – watch out on the Elusive Images blog for release info.
Even though it’s not been a great start to the year, I still find I have things to be grateful for:
- Derrick hasn’t had a fatal stroke and not even a major one from the initial signs, so we’re hopeful he will recover his mobility again like he did with the last two;
- Even though we know we haven’t got long left with Basil, we have had the luxury of leisure time at home with him this last ten days, so we have had lots of opportunity to hold him and stroke him and just be at peace with him
- The wren – I’m sorry for the wren, but pleased to see Basil has some life in him yet
- The new boiler – boy oh boy have I been grateful for the warmth inside this winter
- My craft room – a haven in times of stress
- My inner strength - I’m grateful Adrian isn’t having to deal with his family problems alone and has me to lean on and share it with
So that’s my New Year – I do hope yours has been better. And if there’s any readers from the Carribbean, please would you send a warm weather front over here pronto – the snow is very pretty, but I’m thoroughly bored of it now and would really like to see the back of it.
Happy New Year!

[...] more than a little time has been spent caring for my elderly parents (particularly since the beginning of 2010); the normal day-to-day stresses and strains (and outright sprains in the case of my right knee) [...]
What a start to the year Glenda. My good wishes go to you all.
Lisax
I am so sorry to hear of your worrying and depressing start to the New Year. Hugs all round.
Jane B
good luck with your stamps in America Glenda……..they’ll love ‘em as much as we do
sorry about the rocky start you are having to the New Year, my sympathies to you and yours,
things, hopefully can only get better

Please send my love to Derrick, I hope he’s on the mend soon.
See you next week (hopefully I can get out of the drive – we’re still stuck!) Happy New Year to you both,
Carrie
Wishing you all the best and warm wishes.
Mine wasn’t quite as bad but not as planned, waiting outside a hospital room with my brother whilst my sister-in-law was being attended to in a side room, she’s still in but hopefully on the mend.
Family, who’d have em eh? but then what would we do without them?!
Keep your spirits up
Hi Glends,
Sorry to hear of your troubles. I wish Derrick a speedy recovery, and that he is soon out of hospital. It must be a real nightmare visiting in the snowy weather.
We had snow here the day before Christmas Eve. I fell and hurt my back on Christmas Day. We now have sheets of ice everywhere. Walking to work this morning was terrible. I have just looked out of the window and it is now trying to snow again just great. I am now like you really fed up of it. Bring on the spring.
Your new stamps look lovely.
Sending you Hugs take care xxx Chris B
Hi Glenda
Really sorry to hear of all your troubles and that Adrian’s dad is ill again. A nightmare for you coping with the hospital visiting in this awful weather too. I hope Basil keeps his fighting spirit and as you say it is good that you have had more quality time with him over the holiday.
Glad you managed some escapism with the crafting too – the new stamps look great and how great to release EI onto the American market!
Sending you love and hugs – we’re thinking of you.
Elaine xx
Hi Glenda,
Sorry to hear that your start to the N. Year has not been good. I am amazed that you still manage to cope with what you have to do professionally. I had a very bad start to 2004 for reasons I will not go into, so I understand but I am retired (early), so I did not have things I just had to be doing but maybe that is a help for you. All the best to you and hope the year will improve for you all.
Regards
Ann Williams
Oh Glenda, so sorry about Derrick, what a horrid time you have been having. Please pass on my good wishes to Adrian, and I hope that Derrick continues to improve. Basil’s exploits with the wren, although gruesome, must have been such an encouragement to you, and I wish him well.
The samples look lovely, it’s amazing that you find the time and inspiration with everything else going on. Good luck with America. Most of all take care of yourselves, love Judith x
Happy New Year everyone. I have just joined and checked your blog. Sorry to hear your bad news. My DH had a stroke 2 years this coming May and it took for ages for them to admit him at our general and then another week before being moving to the Stroke Unit.
I hope Derrick has a good recovery and will soon pass his ‘biscuit test’ and be allowed food by mouth.

so sorry to hear of the bad start to the new year – hope Derrick soon feels better and can eat safely, and that the wren has given Basil some appetite back again! Hope everything improves for you all – and am fed up with snow too, at least we haven’t had it anywhere near as bad down here, and I haven’t had to drive very far yet either.
Take care travelling, and keep warm
xx
Oh, Glenda, Glenda, Glenda!
As you say, a very bad start to the year.
A great big hug for you – and pass it on to Adrian.
My very best wishes,
Maggie
Not a good start to the year Glenda.Surely it can only get better. No wonder you stopped blogging.
I too am fed up with the snow. Its really thick and walking and driving is treacherous–I’ve had enough of it, but the forecast for the n.e. England is not good.Take care when you are driving back and forth to hospital Glenda. xJoyce
Hoping that with all this worry and turmoil at the start, your new year just gets better, thinking of you all, xx
What a mixed bag of emotions to cope with! Hope it turns around soon. Thanks for the link to the blank colour chart and the samples look lovely.
xoxo
Sincerely hope that your New Year is better from now on Glenda !
so sorry to hear about all your troubles – thinking of you and wishing you all well.

Oh Glenda, was a bit worried that something had happened to Basil to stop you from blogging but was hoping that instead it was just the hectic time of the year (plus the new computer system and shop site).
Well I’m so glad to hear the Basil is still fighting, bless him. As for the little wren, well he was only doing what’s supposed to come naturally to a cat. On the other hand, I’m really sorry to hear Derrick is back in hospital. For all your sakes I hope it’s not for long and I’m sending positive thoughts winging along the airwaves.
I know you have a very busy time coming up professionally so do take care of yourselves.
Lesley Xx
No wonder you are finding it hard to be positive Glenda, you have such a lot to cope with at the minute. Its hard to find inspiration when you’ve got a lot of worries but those samples look fab
I hope the New Year brings better health for Derrick and for Basil
xx
Just wanted to send the three of you warm wishes and hoping Derrick is recovering. I read the words to the new stamps and I think it will come in very handy as I recieved a scrapbook from my hubby for xmas. I’ve decided to do this one for me, with lots of family photo’s. The words brought a lump to my throat as today would have been my mums birthday. My storehouse is running low at the moment. I need to get the photos out or put on a home video – always helps.
Best wishes Debbie M
Here’s hoping that the New Year only gets better for you, Adrian, Basil and Derrick, after such a troublesome start. Sending you all kindest thoughts and healing and hoping that Derrick is soon back in the bosom of the family.
I know what you mean about feeling actually rather good about Basil and the wren. We felt the same when Selene started bringing in mice again herself, rather than mugging her daughter for them. Our little furry friends do become part of the family, even though non-pet owners may never quite understand.
We’ve only had a dusting of snow here in the Midlands, but it’s been rather cold, so no chance of making any snowmen – barely enough for a snowball. Now we’re back to work next week, I don’t really want any at all as it makes getting around so difficult. I’ll hope that things warm up soon so that travelling to Durham is easier for you.
I’m really hoping that this year we can get back up to visit the Dales – it’s been far too long since the last visit and Barnard Castle and Graphicus is definitely on the to-do list.
Kindest regards,
Karen
Oh, dear, not easy to be positive with all that going on:(.
You and yours are in my thoughts
Happy New Year Glenda, Adrian and Basil!
Its fab that Basil killed that poor little bird. At least he has some life left in him and he’s still fighting. Bless him.
Sorry about Derrick. Hope he’s feeling better soon. Our local hospital closed too so we have to go to Durham now. Its a bit of an eaier journey for us than you, but its still a pain!
We have quite a bit of snow here now and to make matters worse there is a burst water main at the top of my street and the water is coming down in torrents in amongst the snow. Quite a few of the men have been out this afternoon digging the gutter out so the water can run freely. It was running down the middle of the street where the tyre tacks were and any cars who could manange to get up the street had water spraying from their back tyres. A very surreal sight!
Love
Jill

Best Wishes for the new year Glenda.
I’m sorry to hear about Derrick and wish him a speedy return home and hope he recovers as well this time as he did last time.
Poor Basil and poor wren but I can’t blame you for leaving him to eat it when he has not shown any interest in anything else.
The sneek peeks look really exciting, I can’t wait to see them in full
I too have had enough of the snow now, getting out of Torpenhow is awful and I have to go back to work tomorrow.
Take care of yourselves and each other
Hugs Jackie x
