Lovely photos. I think your strange orange thingy may be a quince. We have a bush outside our front door. It has red flowers in late spring/early summer and is a bit prickly? Have a great Christmas. Linda x

Hi Glenda - so very sorry to hear Basil has tested positive. Its a horrible disease. I had my cat for 19 years we had a scare when she was younger and shot but we kept her comfy on a heated blanket and fed her on her favourite food- sardinella in ketchup - she adored them. When she had to be put to sleep lest year I was distraught. Fate intervened a couple of weeks later when someone offered me 2 kittens. I took the weekend to decide if I wanted 2 kittens and decided I did. I collected them took them straight to the vets for check ups, worming fleas treatment and booked them in for jabs. They were fine. 5 months later we tooked them to be spayed. We waited because we didn't let them out whilst the nights were dark and wanted to be home for them whilst they recovered. They had their ops and check ups and were fine. Then 3 weeks later little amber went off her food, I looked at her and thought she looked pale so I decided to take her to the vet that night. She never came home - she had and 8% red blood cell count - it should have been 52 %. We had to make that awful decision -she wasn't even a year old. It was so shocking especially as I had never had a pet die young and it was so quick there hadn't been any other signs and she had been playing the day before. The dilema we then had was what about her sister Suki? The vet wanted to have her checked and warned us that as she was from the same litter as Amber the likehood of the result being negative was very very slim. The test came back negative but he wanted her testing again in 6 months. We decided not to get that 2nd test done and to enjoy her whilst we have her - however long that may be. The vet did tell us that cats can live some time with the disease but should avoid stress - they thought the spaying could have been stressful for amber and triggered the disease to "become active". We don't let Suki out anywhere except in the garden when we are with her - cats can pass the disease during grooming, fighting and from their litter tray. Because of this we have decided not to introduce another cat to the household whilst we have her.
I think all you can do is keep basil warm and as comfortable as possible - make sure if he likes human food it doesn't have onions in it because they can cause aneamia (our old cat loved lasagne and that had onions in it. didn't seem to do her any harm). Keep and eye on the colour of his gums, eyes and tongue and try him on as many different foods as you can.
I'm sure you know him inside and out and if a decision needs to be made you will know when the time is right. My thoughts are with you.

Hi Glenda

Great shot! Here in Kent, we had 6" of snow on Friday and another inch on Saturday night. It's been beautiful. I've been the same with the camera, if it doesn't move and it has snow on....its fair game hehe.

Sadly it has been raining today, so I think it will be a slushy muddy mess by the morning. :( Wish I'd taken the camera with me when DH & I went to the post box on Sunday morning, it was bright sunshine and snow everywhere. Makes you think of calendars and postcards doesn't it.

Best wishes

Billie :)

Hi Glenda

Superb pictures, although the snow makes life hard work it does make for some wonderful photo ops doesn't it.

Enjoy your snuggle with your organic hot water bottle. Bless him! Does he help you with the phone too? My friends cat would jump in her lap every time the phone rang and if he thought he wasn't getting enough attention he would put his paw out and hang up on who she was talking to hehehe.

Take care in the snowy weather

Merry Christmas to you, your family and team at Graphicus.

Billie :)

PS If I go quiet on you for a bit, its coz we are changing internet suppliers. Fingers crossed for a safe switch over.

We're a right load of old crocks aren't we! I can't kneel either. I was in agony kneeling in the loft tonight putting (what seemed like) thousands of boxes and bags back up there after putting all the Christmas lights, ornaments and trees on display. And I have to go up there and get them all down again in a couple of weeks. Never mind I love my deccies so I'll put up with the pain.

snap with the knees - need a hoist to get to my feet again, so i don't get down in the first place now! My garden is more of a wildlife conservation area - long before it was fashionable, as am no gardener - well, it was until the arrival of an extermination squad in shape of a large black cat! I do cut the grass, usually just before OH makes comments about hiring a combine, and hack the shrubs about when it is my turn to do the church flowers, but that is my lot.
Quinces make lovely jam - great on toast - forget the jelly, Chris, jam with chunks in is much better!
Hope Basil and your Nana are both as well as possible, and that everyone is keeping warm.......it's perishing down here in Norfolk, despite sunny blue skies

Hi Glenda - I'm the same as you as well - can't kneel and if I sit down, can't get up. I do have a little trolley thing with wheels that I can sit on and scoot about but its only any good on hard and fairly level surfaces, so I gravelled most of my little garden over last summer and put the plants that I wanted to keep - i.e. need no attention except mild pruning - in large pots to spread about. Very pleased with the result - Low maintenance and maximum impact. I'd agree with Lynne K, your mystery plant is a quince. You can make some kind of jelly with it, to eat with cold meat, but I can't personally recommend it. I think it gives more pleasure your way - left on the tree to look pretty!
Hope you and Adrian and Basil are keeping warm and Basil and your Nana are feeling better.

You can make quince jam - you need 2lb prepared quinces (peeled/sliced), 3lb sugar, lemon juice and water.

You do have to cook for up to an hour.

Google for recipes. Best of luck.

Hi Glenda
Lovely picture - I do like the snow, but only when I am not in it - so like everybody else am staying in. The road outside our house in very icy.

As far as gardening is concerned - I love it - but have the same problems, cannot kneel down, and consequently when we downsized just over a couple of years ago, we have a load of raised borders built so I can have my lovely roses still, and climbers all over the fences.

Take care, I hope you, Adrian, and your families have a lovely Christmas and New Year.
